Kandy in comfortable win

by Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy Sports Corr.

A second half blitz by the defending champions Kandy Sports Club helped them to register a comfortable 46 points (3 goals, 5 tries) to 6 (2 penalties) win over Police Sports Club in their Caltex 'A' Division rugby tournament match played at Nittawela yesterday. At half time Kandy led 12-3.

Kandy went into this game without six of their players like Sri Lanka skipper Sajith Mallikarachchi, Fazil Marija, Nalaka Weerakoddy, Imran Bisthamin, Dilip Selvam, Sean Wijesinghe and they were rested probably for their all important game against CR & FC next Saturday. Former Sri Lanka skipper and winger Radhika Hettiarachchi played his first game for the Kandy Club manning the last line of defence. He had a good game and showed no signs of the injury which resulted in him undergoing surgery and missing the first six games for the season.

Kandy opened scoring quite early with the game being 5 minutes old when centre Chamara Withanage sliced through the defence off a second phase move to score mid right and scrum half Amjad Buksh added the extra points. Kandy 7-0. In the 12th minute Police reduced the lead through a 30 metre penalty fired by flay half Sudesh Dissanayake. Police 3-7.

Kandy had to wait for 33 minutes for their next scoring and it was in the 38th minute that prop Duminda Pullikuttiarachchi peeled off a line out and dived over by the left corner flag. Scrum half Amjad Buksh failed to add the extra points. Kandy 12-3.

In the 5th minute of the second half centre Pradeep Liyanage with a scorching run scored off a three quarter movement and Amjad Buksh added the extra points. Kandy 19-3. In the 9th minute winger Sameera Silva chased the loose ball and scored near the posts and Amjad Buksh added the extra points for Kandy to lead 26-3. In the 12th minute flanker Mohamed Rizvi dived over a heap of players to score by the right corner flag and Buksh failed to add the extra points. Kandy led 31-3.

But in the 26th minute scrum half Prasad Chathuranga who replaced Amjad Buksh made a daring run off a scrum to score by corner flag. This went unconverted. Kandy led 36-3. In the 30th minute Sanjeewa Jayasinghe scored the best try to the match. Intercepting a pass inside Kandy territory he made a blazing 65 metre run slicing through Police defence to touch down far right. This try too went unconverted. Kandy led 41-3.

There was no stopping to this Kandy side and this time it was that nippy scrum half Prasad Chathuranga who foxed the cops defence and ran a good 30 metres and when challenged slipped a pass to lock forward Kapila Silva who dived over to score mid left. This too went unconverted. Kandy led 46-3. This meant they had run 34 points in the second half.

It took 68 minute for Police to score again and this time too through a penalty fined by fly half Sudesh Dissanayake.
