St. Joseph's and Ladies 'short course' champs

St. Joseph's College and Ladies College swimmers put up fine performances to become men and women's overall champions at the Short Course National Swimming Championships conducted by Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union and held at Regent International School swimming pool at Gampaha last Sunday.

This meet was earlier to be held on June 10 and 11 at Mahamaya College swimming pool Kandy but was put off due unavoidable circumstances. The Josephians last year's runner-upto Sri Lanka Navy took the top spot in men's events with 164 points. Trinity were runners-up with 88 1/2 points and Rainbow Aquatic Club third with 80 points.

In the women's overall, last year's third placed Ladies College came on top with 175 1/2 points, followed by last year's champions Mahamaya College in the second place with 170 points and Rainbow AC third with 86 points.

Mayumi - 'star'

Mayumi Raheem of Rainbow Aquatic Club, the third swimmer included to swim at the World Swimming Championships in Montreal, Canada from July 17 to 31 was the 'star' swimmer, establishing four new Sri Lanka records. Chathuri Abeykoon of Ladies College set the other new record.

Raheem accounted for the first record in the 50 metres breast stroke 'clocking' 36.10 secs to erase of the previous mark of 37.96 secs by Prabha Madhavi Dharmadasa of Asian International School. Raheem's second record was in the 100 metres breast stroke with a new time of 1.18.82 secs. She erased off the mark of Prabha who's timing was 1.23.25 secs.

The third record by Raheem was in the 200 metres breast stroke with a time of 2.50.52 secs. Raheem broke the record of Prabha Madhavi Dharmadasa 2.59.70 secs.

Raheem's fourth new record was in the 100 metres individual medley. She had a time of 1.12.24 secs. Dilanthi Ranaweera of Mahamaya College Kandy held the previous record 1.13.69 secs.

Mayumi Raheem for her excellent performances was awarded the Women's Best Swimmers Challenge Trophy. Chathuri Abeykoon accounted for the fifth record or the meet in the 100 metres back stroke. The national swimmer Abeykoon timed 1.13.90 secs to beat the previous record of Radeesha Daluwatta (presently in USA) of Ladies College 1.14.76 secs.

Andrew Abeysekera of Rainbow Aqatic Club was selected as the men's best swimmer.
