Lahiru Peiris - off to Australia again Lahiru Peiris of St. Peter's College, the winner of the Observer-Bata All-Island Most Popular Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year twice 2004 and 2005 and who is in the Sri Lanka Under 19 cricket team tour to England this month is in lucks way. He will go on a scholarship to Australia at the invitation of Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria on his return from England. This is the second time that Peiris will be going to Australia on a scholarship. In the year 2003, Dr. Quintus de Zylva, the President of the Sri Lanka Cricket Foundation of Victoria was a source of great assistance to Lahiru when he was in Australia. On this occasion too, Dr. Quintus de Zylva together with Whinstone Foenander, the President of Old Peterites SC is arranging Peiris' scholarship to Australia. In year 2003, Peiris played for Carey Baptist Grammar School in Kew and did well and was awarded the batting trophy. Whilst in Melbourne, he played for the Old Peterite cricket team that won the one-day six-a-side competition conducted at the Barry Simon Hills on Australia day 2003. Peiris 3rd year coloursman, right-hand middle-order batsman, fared well in this year's 'Big Match' and limited over encounter against the Joes. Peiris scored over 500 runs this season, with the top score being against Gurukula Vidyalaya 108 and 3 half-centuries against Royal, De Mazenod and Ananda Sastralaya, Kotte. He toured with the national Under-15 team to UAE for the Under-15 Asia Cup. Peiris' 'A' level student, is also in the Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup Squad for 2006 to be held in Sri Lanka. |
