Bhopal victims agitate

NEW DELHI, July 9 (AFP) Over 200 victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy demonstrated in the Indian capital Friday demanding a probe into the affairs of a hospital treating survivors of the world's biggest industrial disaster.

The activists gathered in front of the chemical and fertiliser ministry, which deals with matters related to the gas tragedy, and demanded an appointment with a senior official to register their complaints.

The activists, who finally met a senior ministry official, alleged that the Bhopal Memorial Trust hospital, set up in the late 1980s to treat patients of the 1984 tragedy, was deeply mired in corruption. They charged India's former chief justice A.M. Ahmadi - who is chairman of the trust - of being behind the alleged corruption scams. Ahmadi denied the allegations.
