Colombo Port's business grows in first half The Colombo Port has achieved significant growth in business during the first half of this year compared with the levels achieved in the corresponding period of 2004. The Port of Colombo has reported a total container throughput of 1,173,726 TEUs recording a 14.1% growth during the first half of 2005 over the 10.4% growth for the corresponding period a year ago. Transshipment container throughput, which accounted for 66% of the total Colombo volume has reported an increase of 11.3%. SLPA has also been able to exceed last year's corresponding total volume by 107,869 TEUs during the first six months in 2005. Out of this total an increase of 71.3% (76,876 TEUs) was accounted by the transshipment category. The domestic container volume (TEUs) and transshipment container volume (TEUs) has increased by 17.9% and 19.7%. Dry bulk tonnage had recorded a growth of 36.8%. This is mainly due to the significant increase in bulk fertiliser, cement, clinker and gypsum imports. The break-bulk tonnage had declined by 1.1% mainly due to the considerable decrease in the import of sugar. Containerised tonnage and liquid bulk tonnage had increased by 14.9% and 0.6% during the period under review. |
