Transport security for LTTE : SLMM awaits LTTE response by Ranga Jayasuriya The LTTE wanted to add its input to the set of SLMM drafted proposals on security arrangements for the LTTE cadres travelling between the East and the Wanni, the LTTE leadership has informed truce monitors. "The LTTE told us that they have certain comments on the proposals and that they will give their comments in writing. But, we have not received anything yet," Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (Deputy Head) Wagn Winkel told the Sunday Observer. The government, early this week, agreed to the SLMM drafted proposals and is now awaiting the LTTE response. "The main focus of the proposals was the number of trips offered to the LTTE cadres and security arrangements during their movement," a senior official of the Peace Secretariat said referring to the proposals. The government agreeing to the proposals had softened its position, offering several security forces personnel to travel in the same vehicle with LTTE cadres. Last week, two security forces personnel travelled with Trincomalee political chief Elinan, who went to Kilinochchi, citing urgent medical reasons. Earlier, the LTTE demanded the presence of security forces personnel in the vehicles transporting LTTE cadres. The Peace Secretariat official said the number of trips per month needed to be discussed, adding that the government had agreed to provide more trips than one round trip per month from the East to Wanni, as stipulated by the earlier transport arrangement. The LTTE presented a set of its proposals on transport of its cadres and issued an ultimatum for its implementation following a failed land mine attack on a bus transporting LTTE cadres at Welikanda. |
