Colombo all the way in regatta by Leslie Fernando The day belonged to the oarsmen and oarswomen of University of Colombo who showed team work of high order and superior rowing skills to retain the men's and women's overall championships over University of Moratuwa in the 22nd Annual Regatta hosted by University of Colombo and held on the Beira Waters on Friday. University of Colombo thus retained the Prof. Stanley Wijesundera Challenge Trophy for men and the Lloyd Sirimanne Challenge Trophy for women with authority. University of Colombo men's crew had six wins including the Boat Race to collect 40 points (no points awarded to 'C' Fours) to University of Moratuwa 2 points). Colombo had wins in the 'A' Sculls (6 points) 'B' Pair (6), 'A' Pairs (8) and 'A' fours. They also won the Graduate Fours. Moratuwa only had a win in the 'B' Sculls (2 points). The Colombo Ladies also fared prominently winning 3 events of the 4 including the Fours event. The points tally UoC 26 to UoM 6 points. UoC had wins in the Sculls, 'a' Pairs and the Fours and the Fours and Moratuwa took the 'B' Pairs. Both captains of the University of Colombo M. B. G. Kaushalya (men's) and Thirusha Abeywardena (ladies) made a big impression, rowing with great endurance, strength and balance to gain success in three main events. Kaushalya had a hand in winning the men's 'A' Sculls, men's 'A' Pairs and the 'A' Fours (Boat Race) while Abeywardena also was involved in winning the Ladies Sculls, 'A' Pairs and Fours. Indeed a good achievement for Kaushalya and Abeywardena. |
