SLFP/ Government one 'Camp' - PM The Prime Minister's office responding to a news item titled 'Rajapakse camp wants poll this year' published in the Island newspaper 4th August 2005 says: "This news item attempts to give the impression to the reader that the 'Rajapakse Camp' wishes that next Presidential Election be held in 2005 and not in 2006. The Prime Minister wishes to strongly deny this. "The SLFP and government are of the clear view that the Presidential Election should be held before 12th November 2006. The SLFP and the Government recommended to the President that she should refer to the Supreme Court the question that has arisen with regard to whether that date of Presidential Election should be 2005 or 2006. The President has now referred this matter to the Supreme Court as she is authorised to do under the Constitution of the Republic. "The Prime Minister's view is the same as that of the SLFP and the Government. "The news item also refers to 'Rajapakse Camp' Prime Minister wishes to strongly state that there are no differing 'Camps' in the SLFP nor in the Government. The SLFP and the Government have only one 'Camp' and that is the SLFP/PA 'Camp' and all members owe allegiance to one government. |
