Cello prodigy

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) (UK), the world's leading provider of graded music examinations and assessments, held their High Scorer's Concert and distribution of awards for the year 2004 recently at the Bishop's College Auditorium. With over one hundred years of experience and expertise in music education, the ABRSM has brought forth many a true musician - those who adhere to the ultimate demand of giving the joy of music to others.

A pupil of Savitri Jayatileke and a student at Colombo International School, the young cellist, Oshan Gunawardana walked away with many awards Oshan Gunawardana was the proud winner of the Rohan De Saram, Gold medal for outstanding achievement on the Cello. He was the first Sri Lankan to win this honour.He has been the consecutive winner of the prize for Cello (awarded to the highest scorer) from grade 1 to 8.

He also won the Sam Jayatileka Memorial for scoring the highest mark in grade 8 Cello, the Lavinia Jayatileka Memorial for being a winner in the same instrument for five consecutive years and the Strings - Sound & Co Trophy for obtaining the highest score in a string instrument in the grades of 6 to 8. Oshan being the highest scorer in the primary category, also performed at the concert. It was indeed a surprise treat for the audience who thoroughly enjoyed the entertaining music played by young Oshan.
