Presidential election and the Muslim factor The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka in a press release clarifying its position in the presidential election says, "the Muslim Council of Sri Lanka comprises 58 of the largest and most influential National Muslim Organizations in Sri Lanka." "The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka convened a meeting of community/civil society leaders from all parts of Sri Lanka to discuss the forthcoming Presidential election and the Muslim factor on the 11th of September 2005. "Key issues of concern for the Muslim community raised during the meeting were presented to the two aspiring presidential candidates, Ranil Wickremesinghe on the 12th and to Mahinda Rajapakse on the 14th of September for their consideration and necessary action in formulating their manifestos. "The Muslim Council of Sri Lanka is a non-political civil society organization committed to bringing together the Muslim community and articulating their concerns with one voice. Recent reports have been made by the state and private media that the Muslim Council pledged its support to one candidate or the other. "We vehemently deny these and ask you to kindly carry our denial with the same prominence given by your organization/newspaper earlier. "We did not pledge to support any candidate, but only urged both of them to consider the Muslim community's concerns in formulating their manifestos." |
