Trinity win Bradby Shield with highest aggregate

Royal trounced again

by Ranjan Anandappa

Trinity recaptured the Bradby Shield after a lapse of four years with an exhilarating second half rally defeating Royal by 33 points (4 goals and try) to 7 (1 goal) in their second 'leg' encounter played at the Royal College Sports Complex grounds yesterday. Trinity won the first 'leg' 36\6 played in Kandy and yesterday's 33\7 win gives Trinity their highest aggregate in a Bradby Shield competition 69\13.

However, Royal holds the highest aggregate in the series with 83\6, (44\0 in the first 'leg' and 39\0 in the second under Zulki Hamid in 2002. Trinity's last 'Bradby' win was in the year 2000 under David Lochow.

The winners did not find things going easily their way at the beginning of the match as Royal gave a spirited display.

They won the ball on numerous occasions in the lineouts but could not convert them into points due to lack of cohesive play. They defended exceptionally well and kept their opponents at bay.

But in the 12th minute of the match Nimalka Maddumapatabendi broke away and scored off a five yard scrum. Suranga Pushpakumara gave them the extra points.

Trinity led 7-0 at the breather. Soon after resumption, Royal levelled the scores 7\7 off a push over try scored by prop Chaturanga Hettiarachchi which was goalled by Wijewardena.

With the scores on par Trinity sprang back with a vengeance and found their fluency with their forwards and backs combining effectively to score four more tries in rapid succession.

With Trinity reigning supreme Royal wilted under pressure and lost their way and from a 7 all half time score, Trinity were piling up points without much competition during the latter part of the match. Skipper B. N. R. Fernando scored off a line out and Madumapatabedige too crossed the Royal line and Shehan Deen gave the finishing touches to a fine bit of work done by Suranga Pushpakumara.

B. N. R. Fernando once again scored the last try which Arojan Balasunderam adding the extra points. Dilroy Fernando refereed.

Through to Semis

Both Zahira and Science Colleges qualified for the semi-finals of the Schools Premier Trophy Knock-Out Rugby Championships sponsored by Milo when they received walkovers from St. Sylvester's and Carey respectively at Havelock Park yesterday.
