Puttick's explosive knock throttles Kiwis

by Srian Obeyesekere

Opener Andrew Puttick struck an explosive unbeaten 87 in South Africa 'A's emphatic 6-wicket triumph over New Zealand 'A' at the SSC grounds yesterday to lead the trianguler series with two wins from two outings.

Left-hander Puttik struck 16 scorching boundaries sharing in an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 99 runs between Zender de Bruyn who was on 45 when South Africa reached their 170-run target in 35.2 overs.

A fairly star studded New Zealand outfit consisting of several former Test stars including Chris Harris and Mathew Sinclair could muster only 169 in 48.3 overs having batted first.

The right handed Bruyn struck six boundaries having joined Puttick with his side reduced to 71 for 4 wickets after Harris in the fourth ball of his first over gave New Zealand some hope by trapping the South African skipper Jaques Rudolph leg before wicket for 13.

New Zealand's chances of staying alive in the triangular nose dived when their front line was throttled at 27 for 3 wickets.

Former Test batsman James Marshall top scored with 32 while super substitute J.Howe, coming instead of No.8 I.O'Brian was the second highest scorer with an undefeated 31 but with New Zealand unable to exploit the new rule to advantage.

Wicket-keeper Solekile had a good outing accounting for four catches.
