Sri Lanka soccerites to get valuable practice before Gold Cup tourney By Lal Gunasekera The Sri Lanka football team will be touring Thailand for about a week in November to play three games against top Thai opposition to get the much needed foreign exposure before the South Asian Federation's Gold Cup Soccer Championship scheduled to take place in Karachi, Pakistan from December 8 to 18. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL), Chrysantha Perera, told the Sunday Observer that the 35-member national pool is presently under training at the Baddegana Complex under national coach, Sampath Perera. He further said that from the 35 players, the national pool will be pruned down to about 20 later, while Negombo Youth's Dudley Stainwall (who earlier represented Saunders) expected to retain the captaincy. Perera also said that Sri Lanka's under-17 and under-20 teams too are scheduled to play in two tournaments of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) in Bangladesh and India respectively. Both tournaments are scheduled for November. He said that each pool comprises 30 players and will be pruned down soon to 25 and again to 20. The competition in Bangladesh is the AFC's under-17 Youth Championship in Dhaka, while the AFC's under-20 Championship is likely to be staged in Goa. |
