Multimedia teaching methods vital by Don Asoka Wijewardena Interactive teaching methods using multimedia are absolutely essential to produce students the world needs. The Ministry of Education is in the process of proliferating ICT education to all schools in collaboration with Microsoft,said Secretary to the Ministry of Education Dr.Tara de Mel at the Innovative Teachers' Competition 2005 Awards Presentation at the Trans Asia Hotel last week Dr.de Mel said that Sri Lanka's education system which had not been changed over the past few years is now undergoing a series of changes,especially in the sphere of information technology and ICT education. She said that the global computer giant Microsoft had joined the Ministry of Education to introduce ICT-related education. Dr.de Mel said that the Ministry had drawn special attention to provide ICT education to teachers in the first instance so that students could be given the best method of education with new market competence. Microsoft Country Manager Sriyan de Silva Wijeratne said that if Sri Lanka was to achieve success in education on par with other countries,all teachers as well as students should be given modern education, especially IT and ICT education. He said that 99 countries had already adopted the Microsoft educational system and added that it was the wish of Microsoft to popularise Microsoft educational systems to Sri Lanka's schools with the assistance of the Ministry of education. Dean of the Faculty of IT Education at the University of Moratuwa Dr.Ajith Manapperuma said that Sri Lanka was in need of competent teachers and teachers were being encouraged to embrace technology related education. He said that Microsoft had come forward to recognise the crucial role played by teachers to remove all destructive elements which might create barriers. Dr.Manapperuma also said that the Ministry of Education and Faculty of IT Education at the Moratuwa University had successfully implemented ICT education for teachers throughout the island and it was the wish of the Ministry and the University to use ICT as an educational tool. Around 240 teachers have undergone specialised training in ICT education and out of 240 teachers only 20 innovative teachers were selected through a competition. Nine teachers attached to primary education received merit awards and nine teachers in the secondary education also received merit awards for 2005. In recognition of exemplary and innovative use of technology,three teachers received Microsoft Special Awards. |
