Thondaman tilts towards UNP CWC Leader and self-styled `King Maker' Arumugam Thondaman is reportedly offering his services to the highest bidder in the Presidential elections. It is understood that he has demanded large funds for his party if he is to support Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at the polls. Not surprisingly the Rajapaksa camp has rejected such conditions in order to sign a MOU with the CWC. He is now reportedly tilting towards UNP candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe. Sources close to Thondaman, attribute this change of attitude of the CWC leader also to his antagonism towards former CWC Vice President and ex-MP S. Sathasivam and other plantation sector trade unionists who are backing the Prime Minister in his election campaign. During Thondaman's American tour, he not only thanked President Kumaratunga for giving him the opportunity to visit New York but also had several rounds of important talks with the President. The fact remains that he has put forward 19 demands to both Presidential candidates if either of them want his support. Now, CWC Deputy Leader R. Yogarajan says that his party's stance in the elections will be announced tomorrow Monday Oct. 3. |
