IBSL certificates and awards for 675 candidates by Surekha Galagoda Six-hundred-and-seventy-five candidates will receive certificates and awards at the 10th annual convocation of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka (IBSL) on October 18 at the BMICH. The chief guest will be British High Commissioner Stephen Nicholas Evans while the Guests of Honour, will be the Governor of the Central Bank Sunil Mendis and Chairman, People's Bank P. Amarasinghe. Chairman IBSL and Deputy Governor Central Bank W.A. Wijewardenea said that the IBSL in Sri Lanka can offer professional qualifications relating to banking and finance. At present IBSL trains 3,000 bankers per annum. Unlike in the past it is now open to school-leavers to get a qualification in banking and IBSL has arranged with the banks to get a three-month training for such students. As opportunities are expanding in the sector there is a demand for professionals, he said. Recipients of the Diploma in Banking and Finance are eligible to follow a degree program offered by the Institute of Financial Services London through the Chartered Institute of Bankers(CIB) London as the syllabuses and curriculum for these programs are moderated by examiners of CIB London. Wijewardena said that being a professional body in an industry which is changing rapidly the IBSL continuously reviews its programs to suit the needs of organisations in the financial industry. Therefore we plan to introduce similar programs conducted by the CIB. We are also planning to introduce distance learning facilities next year, he said. IBSL has also introduced soft skills development programs to help students find employment while the IBSL conducts Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programs for its Associates and Fellows to update their knowledge and skills which are in demand today. |
