No Bill to outlaw loudspeakers in Mosques

By S. S. Warani

Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana said that there was no truth in the story carried by some Tamil media that the Buddhasasana Ministry had taken steps to introduce a Bill in Parliament to prevent the using of loudspeakers in mosques. Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Governor Mowlana said that this was malicious propaganda carried out during Ramazan fasting to obtain Muslim votes by certain parties. He said that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the People's Alliance had always supported the Muslim cause since the time of late S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse never took any steps against Muslims in the country. He said that he had contacted Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and spoke about this to him.

Buddhasasana Ministry Secretary D. W. Abeywickrama said that his ministry had not taken any such move against any religion. His ministry would not introduce any Bill to curtail the religious freedom. This was malicious propaganda, he said.
