Aceh rebels hand over guns BANDA ACEH,Indonesia, Oct 15 (AFP) - Rebels in Indonesia's Aceh province handed over their guns to foreign monitors Saturday in a second day of disarmament as part of a peace pact designed to end a three-decade insurgency. The disarmament took place in the Madat area of East Aceh district and was attended by the head of the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM), Pieter Feith, and representatives of the government and Free Aceh Movement (GAM). It is one of four sites in the district designated for GAM rebels to turn in their guns to AMM monitors. "The decomissioning has already started in three sites this morning and the fourth will take place later in the afternoon," AMM press officer Juri Laas told AFP. The rebels handed over a total of 26 weapons at the event in Madat area, local radio reported. The weapons were being surrendered for destruction by the AMM, which was established under the August Helsinki agreement between the government and GAM to end the separatist conflict in the northern tip of Sumatra island. The rebels surrendered 128 weapons in four disarmament events in northern Aceh on Friday. Of the total, the AMM recognized 91 weapons and disqualified 37 weapons. Government officials disputed another 10 of the 91 weapons. |
