Colombo tea auction averages above others by Elmo Leonard The Colombo tea auction average from January to August this year at $1.80 per kilogram is way above the average prices of other international tea auction centres. The second highest is Kolkota, at $1.63 per kilo, for the same period. The third highest is the tea auction centre, Mombasa, in Kenya, at $1.46 per kilo, according to statistics on the world wide web. These auction averages are followed by, Chittagong $1.21 and Jakarta $1.05 per kilo. Anil Cooke of Asia Siyaka said that most teas Sri Lanka produces is of the orthodox type (as opposed to CTC or other types coming from other producer countries) and orthodox teas command the highest prices in the international arena. North Indian teas are largely orthodox, with seasonal teas coming from Darjeeling and Assam. Sri Lanka also has bright liquoring teas which fetch premium prices produced during the Western and Eastern quality tea seasons. Other auction centres do not have an equivalent quality of tea to battle
with the quality of Ceylon teas. |
