WNS expands operations, eyes professionals

WNS, a leader in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) plans to employ 9,000 persons by 2007 working on the Aviva account. At present 5,000 persons are employed in both countries, said Group Executive Director Aviva Patrick Snowball.

He said that there is a very close alignment between UK and Sri Lanka as the accounting and legal standards are aligned to UK.

We have been very impressed with the staff employed by the company and the training was in UK. The company is planning to increase the number of accountants to 300 within the next three months. We are also considering to buy our own building as we are here and are committed to the country.

Group CEO WNS Neeraj Bhargava said that with the growth in global telecommunications the BPO industry has expanded by leaps and bounds and North India has carved a niche for itself in the global BPO industry earning a $ seven billion revenue.

It has created 50,000 jobs directly while indirectly more than double this amount of job opportunities and jobs have been created.

He said that the uniqueness of Sri Lanka is that Sri Lankans are hospitable and if Sri Lankans can build on that there is tremendous potential but English skills should improve.

The company has invested 3.5 million pounds out of which 1.3 million has been spent on training which is given high priority at WNS. He said that WNS expanded its operations in Sri Lanka mainly to leverage on the highly skilled professionals in finance, commercial and legal disciplines.

All Sri Lankan staff attached to WNS have been trained in UK or possess internationally accepted accountancy qualifications. President, Global Operations WNS Eric Selvadurai said that in one year WNS has become a leader in the BPO business and a pioneer in creating a world class outsourced finance and accounting centre of excellence in Sri Lanka.

The company has made significant investment in training and provides equal opportunities for growth and development within the organisation.

The WNS staff strength has grown from 42 to 250 employees within one year. The company plans to increase its staff to 500 by 2006.

The working lifestyle of the staff has progressed significantly since joining WNS. Each employee goes through a comprehensive training program that includes a compulsory training period in the UK and customised training programs that uses novel training methods.
