Sellout to terrorists, say ex-Service Chiefs The proposal to reduce the number of Brigades in the Sri Lanka Army to six outlined in the Manifesto of the UNP Presidential candidate places the country in great danger and it amounts to a total sell out to the terrorists says a joint press statement issued by former SLAF Commander Air Vice Marshal P.H. Mendis, Former Navy Commander Rear Admiral T.D. Gunasekera and Former Chief of Staff Joint Operations Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Army Major General W.H.G. Fernando. This amounts to a reduction of the Army's manpower by 85 percent, they added. While the powerful US Army has deployed over 100, 000 personnel and many modern weapons, naval craft and war planes in its anti-terrorist operations in Iraq and Afghanistan the Indian Army sent over 9 brigades equipped with powerful naval craft and planes during the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka, they said. Hence, the reduction of the Sri Lankan Army with few naval craft and airplanes to 6 brigades poses a grave danger to the country, they concluded. |
