Rainbow AC win mens, womens overall titles

Rainbow Aquatic Club created history becoming mens and womens overall champions for the first time at the National Aquatic Championships conducted by the SLASU Interim Committee at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday.

In the Mens Swimming championships Rainbow AC colleted 192 points. St. Joseph's College were runner-up with 151 points with Trinity College third with 149 points.

Rainbow AC had 174 points in the Women's Swimming Championship to take the top spot. Last year's champions Mahamaya College (Kandy) finished runner-up with 130 1/2 points. Ladies College took the third place with 116 points.

Rainbow AC carried away both the Dudley Senanayake Challenge Trophy for their top performance in the men's and women's overall championships.

Four new national records were established yesterday making the tally of records to seven. Andrew Abeysinghe of Rainbow AC accounted for the third national record in the Mens 100 metres Back Stroke 'clocking' 1:02:96 secs.

Abeysinghe who was selected the mens champion swimmer also won the 400 metres Free Style 4:59:51 secs. Altogether Abeysinghe won five events with three new records.

Other records broken yesterday were Raghvan Madawala of Sri Lanka Navy in the mens 200 metres Breast Stroke 2:38:84 secs. Kalyan Veera of Rainbow AC set new record in the 50 metres Breast Stroke 31:84 secs.

Meanwhile Mayumi Raheem of Otter AC was responsible for the fourth record in the womens 50 metres Breast Stroke 36:29 secs. Raheem won the 200 metres Breast Stroke also 2:55:49 secs. She also proved her class to win five events at the meet and was selected the champion women's swimmer of the championships.

Abeysinghe and Raheem were presented the SLASU Challenge Trophies.
