One killed in Achchuveli clash One person was killed and several others injured following a clash between civilians with policemen and soldiers in Achchuveli Jaffna on Friday. The incident happened when a group of mobs hurled six hand grenades at the army camp between 3.30. and 4.30 p.m., injuring a soldier. Three hand grenades had exploded, according to a communique issued by the Joint Operations Headquarters, Colombo. The Police had used tear gas and fired several rounds to prevent the crowd throwing more hand grenades at them. Of the three civilians injured one succumbed to injuries after being admitted to the Jaffna hospital. The incident happened after a young girl living with her mother and two sisters had complained to Achchuveli police that an unidentified man had attempted to molest her when she was seated near the entrance to her house. While the Police was investigating the complaint, the villagers instigated by the LTTE had got them to throw stones, burnt tyre and demanded the withdrawal of the army from the area. |
