From The Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan 'Boycott election' posters in Jaffna A demonstration was staged opposite Jaffna district office of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) condemning the atrocities by the military forces in Puttur east. Virakesari (VK) - 01/11) 'Tamils celebrate the 'Deepavali' festival today marking the elimination of evil things. It is a pity that we are not in a position to celebrate Deepavali which signifies such a lofty ideology in its natural sense in our homeland' said the Eelam People Democratic Party general secretary and Hindu Cultural Minister Douglas Devananda in his 'Deepavali' message. (VK - 01/11) The PAFFREL organization's head Kingsly Rodrigo said that the LTTE had deplored government's decision to set up polling clusters far away from the residences of people making them travel about 50km to vote in the presidential election. He disclosed this after meeting with the LTTE political leader S. P. Thamilchelvan. (VK - 01/11) 'Muslims resettled in the Jaffna peninsula will go along with the Tamils' decision on 'to vote whom' at the forthcoming presidential election' said the Jaffna Muslim Secretariat secretary Shaheel Moulavi yesterday. They publish news stories promoting divisions and rifts amongst people by means of making references to their ethnic identity such as Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim etc. Media personnel should not engage themselves in such activities' said the Trincomalee district Government Agent K.A.Leelananda in a meeting with journalists last Monday. (VK - 02/11) On being accused of exploiting the leadership for his personal benefits Hafeez Nazeer Ahmed has been expelled from the leadership of Muslim National Alliance. Abdul Razool has been elected the new leader. (SudarOli(SOI) - 04/11) Copies of the United National Party's election manifesto 'People's agenda' is being distributed to public in Kandy these days.Tamil speaking people living in the area are dismayed over the manifesto being in Sinhala only. (VK - 04/11) Bishops of the Jaffna, Mannar and Trincomalee districts in a joint statement have called for a free and fair election. The statement calls on the Tamil community to be wise and vigilant in taking their stand at the election considering the prolonged plight of the community. (VK - 05/11) Posters demanding the public to boycott the presidential election, eschew from working for any party and warning the military forces of a possible attack on them if they fail to vacate "their mother land" are displayed in Jaffna. Such posters also caution the public that anyone who fails to obey the instructions would be severely punished. (SOI - 05/11) |
