Landmine victims rise in Nepal KATHMANDU, Dec 10 (AFP) - On his way home from school, Tara Chettri's friend saw a landmine and picked it up. The device exploded, killing Chettri's friend on the spot and peppering the 16-year old with shrapnel. "The whole incident haunts me like a nightmare even today," said Chettri, who still needs regular hospital visits for the injuries he sustained back in February. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) says the number of deaths and injuries from landmines worldwide has fallen - but not in Nepal, where a Maoist insurgency has seen both sides increase the use of the deadly devices. Since the Maoists began their "people's war" in 1996, more than 1,200 people have been killed and 2,500 more maimed by landmines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). |
