Upcountry Tamil parties unite

From the Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan

Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) leader Arumugan Thondaman and Up-country People's Front (UPF) leader P. Chandrasekaran held talks in Colombo yesterday. It is said that both of them have arrived at an agreement to work together in the future in order to defeat Government's attempts to create divisions among up-country people and thus weaken their political strength. Meanwhile, it is believed that four parliamentarians of the CWC are likely to cross over to the Government. (Virakesari (VK) - 13/12)

"We created panic between Tamils and Muslims for the sake of our security being escorted by the military. Karuna is now in India. I conversed with Karuna over the phone before the Akkaraipattu incident," said Jnanatheeban alias Samithambi Arulkumar (26), a member of the Karuna faction.

Jnanatheeban alias Samithambi Arulkumar and Puhalventhan alias Thurairajasingam Chandrakumar who surrendered to the LTTE from Karuna's faction addressed a press conference in Karadiyanaru, Batticaloa yesterday. (VK - 13/12)

Three CWC parliamentarians of those who were planning to cross over to the Government changed their decision at the last moment. Earlier on, along with Vadivel Suresh who pledged to support the Government, three other Members of Parliament Puthirasihamani, Sellachami and Jegatheeswaran had met with the President.

During this meeting it was decided that Vadivel Suresh be given a ministry and others to be appointed as advisers to the President. Yet, it is learnt that the three MPs thought it was pointless to be with the Government without portfolios and returned to their party changing their mind. (SudarOli (SOI) - 14/12)

Fear prevailed among people in Jaffna as abrupt search operations were carried out in many parts of the peninsula yesterday. Large number of forces were deployed for the operations. Sriharan Rajakajan (24) of Potpathi Street was arrested during the search and released later on by the court. (Thinakural (TK) - 14/12)

Corpses of two Tamil youths were recovered at Kiran Parangiyamadu, Batticaloa yesterday. Victims have been identified as Thambimuthtu Thambiraj (29), father of two and Kanthasamy Chandran (22). (TK - 14/12)

Member of Parliament M. Sachithanantham said that Badulla plantation workers were on strike yesterday protesting the search operation carried out at CWC leader Arumugan Thondaman's residence in Kotagala. (TK 15/12)

A statement has been sent to Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission by 'Pongiyelum Makkal Padai (Uprising People's Force) warning that serious repercussions would have to be endured unless the oppression and search operations in the Jaffna peninsula are stopped. (TK 15/12)

Tamil National Alliance, Ceylon Workers' Congress, Up-Country People's Front and Wester Province People's Front have expressed consent to work together regarding common issues facing the Tamil people. Leaders of these parties said that they were prepared to work together in order to face the challenges from the chauvinists. (VK - 17/12)

Tsunami affected people living in temporary shelters in the Batticaloa District are facing severe difficulties and disease outbreaks following the torrential rain. (TK - 17/12)
