Good offices sought for member's release :

PLOTE appeals to diplomatic community

A very senior member of the People's Liberation Organisation of Thamil Eeelam (PLOTE), Sinnathamby Ganeshalingam, also known as Farook, has been abducted by LTTE on 12.02.2005.

Following is the full text of an appeal to the Heads of various foreign missions based in Colombo, sent by the Media Co-ordinator of PLOTE, K. Pathmanathan:

"Mr. Sinnathamby Ganeshalingam a very senior member of our party was abducted on 12.02.2005 by a gang of ten armed men at Asikulam in Vavuniya. Eye witness has confirmed that these armed men are members of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

"Mr. Ganeshalingam was also a candidate of our party at the last general election.

"I will be most grateful if you would use your influence to secure the release of Mr. Ganeshalingam. "Mr. Ganeshalingam has been involved in the resettlement of displaced Tamil families and is not involved in any form of armed struggle or activity. In fact Mr. Ganeshalingam has been involved in rehabilitation activities over a long period of time, dating back to the Gandhyam Movement during later part of 70s.

"Since the abduction of Mr. Ganeshalingam the security forces have been able to apprehend two vehicles used in the abduction and take into custody three persons who were directly involved in the abduction itself. These three persons have accepted that they were involved in the abduction and are members of Auxiliary Forces of the LTTE.

"I take this opportunity to inform you that seven of our members have been abducted by the LTTE on earlier occasions too. Several of our unarmed political workers have been killed by the LTTE during the period of the ceasefire. I am attaching a list of names and details of our political workers who have been killed or abducted. We have complained each and every violations by the LTTE to the Security Forces, the police and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. Unfortunately they have shown little or no interest.

"After the signing of CFA between the SL Government and LTTE, we have handed over the weapons given to us for the protection of our cadres, believing the Norwegian government and the SLMM would guarantee our safety. Unfortunately they have let us down badly. Our cadres are unarmed and helpless in the face of armed attacks by the LTTE.

"As such I am forced to seek the good offices of persons of goodwill like you to bring pressure on the LTTE to abide by the rules of the cease-fire agreement and not to carry out violence on persons holding political opinions different from their own.

"Finally I request you once again to use your good offices to secure the release of Mr. Ganeshalingam and other members of our organisation."
