Violence escalating in Jaffna

From The Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan

Over a hundred innocent Tamils were arrested in search operations jointly carried out by the Army and Police in various parts of Colombo on day before yesterday. Most of them had been arrested while returning home from work. (Thinakural (TK) - 19/12)

One journalist and two other employees of the Tamil daily 'Thinakural' were detained without investigation for a long time by the Police in Kirulapone, day before yesterday.

Police refused to give an ear to the journalist even after showing the media accreditation card issued by the Government Information Department. They were also prevented from informing relatives of the arrest via mobile phones. They were released the next day after TNA parliamentarians Raviraj and Vinayagamoorthi visited the police station and stressed that they be released. The Police also took photographs and finger prints of the newspaper employees. (TK - 19/12)

Students of the Jaffna University have decided to ask the LTTE to provide military training in order to save the people and the students from the Army in Jaffna. The students have taken this decision following the brutal attacks by the Army during yesterday's demonstration organised by the university students.

Students held a gathering yesterday afternoon where they severely condemned the atrocities of the military forces. A vast majority of students maintained that further steps should be taken as hartals and strikes were proving to be futile exercises. (TK - 20/12)

Violent attacks by the Army and Police are escalating in Jaffna. The Army abruptly entered the Jaffna Campus yesterday and attacked the students at random. Three, including a lecturer, were severely assaulted and taken to the Jaffna police station. They were released later on. (SudarOli (SOI) - 21/12)

Condemning and protesting the attacks on the Jaffna University students by the Army Eastern University students and students of Vavuniya Campus affiliated to Jaffna University have also lodged a strike. (SOI - 21/12)

'In the event of India offering assistance to Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu too will turn into a Kashmir ' warned Vaiko, General Secretary of Marumalarchi Thiravida Munnetta Kazhaham (MTMK), Tamilnadu.

Speaking at a book launch held recently Vaiko said that he had emphatically told both Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress leader Sonia Ganthi that India should not sign any defensive pact with Sri Lanka. If this warning is to be ignored another Kashmir would emerge. (TK - 22/12)

Jaffna University has been closed until the 2nd of next month due to inadequate security. (TK - 22/12)

Attacks on military forces have increased in the last few days in Jaffna. (SOI - 22/12)

The decision of the Ceylon Workers' Congress, Tamil National Alliance, Up-country People's Front and Western Province People's Front to act together in facing common issues that concern the Tamils has received a grand reception. Intellectuals have opined that having divisions as Jaffna Tamils, Up-country Tamils, Colombo Tamils etc. is not going to be fruitful. (Virakesari (VK) - 23/12)
