Of arrests, hartals and threats

Nine Tamils including three women were arrested in cordon and search operations carried out by the Colpetty and Kotahena Police, Colombo last Saturday.

A member of the search operation squad said that none of those nine persons had any document to prove their identity.

One youth was possessing a tiny video camera when arrested. Another one was having a picture of LTTE leader Pirapakaran and two others counterfeit documents to obtain passports. (Thinakural (TK) - 26/12)

'Pongi ezhum padai' has said that five people killed the attacks in Jaffna last Saturday were innocents and military force's claim that they are members of the LTTE was an utter lie.

A statement issued by the above 'force' said that those who carried out the attack on the Army on Saturday had returned to their site safely.

"We, the people's force, are carrying out attacks on the army using minor weapons. Being unable to face our attacks, military forces are assaulting and murdering the innocent public.

We severely condemn the killing of a young woman in Chavakacheri on Friday and four youths and a woman in the Jaffna town on Saturday. The service of the People's force will continue until we kill 50 military men in return", the statement said. (TK - 26/12)

Leaders of the Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC) and Up-country People's Front (UPF) have appealed to mourn the death of Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham all over the up-country by hoisting black flags.

Condemning the barbaric killing of the MP these two parties have asked the up country people to share the sorrow.

It is said that UPF has made transport arrangements to enable the up country people to attend the funeral of the TNA parliamentarian. (Virakesari - 27/12)

Actions have been expedited to contain the selling of illegal liquor in the plantation sector. Special police groups conduct search operations. Furthermore, awareness groups in the plantations informed the police and the media of any illegal liquor distribution.

Mini-liquor bars that were running without licence are also being sealed these days. (VK - 27/12)

People living in the Army controlled areas of Jaffna lodged their complaints relating to criminal affairs and other disputes in LTTE's police station operating in Muhamalai.

People are hesitant to go to police stations in Jaffna as their complaints get dragged on without being solved. (VK - 27/12)

Jaffna peninsula came to a standstill yesterday as all government servants went on strike and a day of mourning was observed. Government servants have been on strike from Monday demanding the end of atrocities of the military forces.

All the government offices failed to function as a result of the strike.

Meanwhile, shops and all other institutions in Batticaloa remained closed yesterday mourning the death of the TNA MP. (TK - 28/12)

Thousands and thousands of people paid their final homage to Maamanithar Joseph Pararajasingham in Vanni yesterday. The TNA MP's body was taken from Batticaloa to Vanni yesterday for public to pay their tribute. (VK - 29/12)

'The Army forces should abandon violence if the Tamil people were to be made calm' said LTTE's political wing leader S.P.Thamilchelvan in Kilinochchi yesterday. 'Government should realise that it will never succeed in its attempt to divide the strength of the Tamil people and destroy them' he said. (VK - 29/12)

Tamil National Alliance MPs representing the eastern part have been threatened. It is said that leaflets are being circulated by a group called 'Sennan force for the liberation of the eastern people' demanding the MPs to relinquish their parliamentary seats. (SudarOli (SOI) - 30/12)
