Happenings/ People A powerful message of oneness Dr. Lakshman Silva
Harmony - multicultural concert - a Norwegian funded project, which was held in Kandy at the Girls' High School Auditorium on Friday December 9, was highly entertaining and gave a powerful message of oneness. It was a full Hall with art lovers, academics and students from the Peradeniya University. It was harmony all the way. Every item was choreographed beautifully to emphasize ethnic harmony, by the producer and artistic director Kalasuri Arunthathy Sri Ranganathan. The concert proved that artistic and cultural work is the best way to create identification, recognition, mutual respect, and understanding among people.
Maestros and leading artisties Ravibandu Vidyapathy, Channa Wijewardena, Kolithabanu Disanayake, Kumara Liyanawatte, Abiramy Kandeepan, Sri Shyamalangan, Tony Hasan, Nesan Thiyagarajan, Jambunathan, Ratnadurai, Ruckshan Mark and many other leading artistes performed. Popular and leading actor Ravindra Randeniya, in his compering thanked the Norwegian Embassy for supporting such a culturally valuable concert. The Peradeniya Singers of the Kandy music society led by Bridget Halpe were guest artisties, at the show. The concert in Kandy was organised due to popular request after the Colombo show in October. The media sponsors were ANCL, Metro News, MTV and MBC. Shows like Harmony with traditional values should be performed around the Island and also at International platforms. Mala - the come back CD by Mahes Perera The return of Sunil Malawana to the music scene was enthusiastically applauded by singers, musicians and even celebrities from the film world when his come-back CD 'Mala' was launched recently at Earl's Court, Trans Asia.
It was an entertaining evening compered by Bevil Palihawadana, which saw Sunil perform songs from his CD and was also in a duet with Sunil Perera of Gypsies fame. The CD contains twelve tracks which includes Api Dedena a song he recorded with Super Golden Chimes in 2004 and two English songs. Speaking at the launch Sunil Malawana said that the music direction was handled by Chandral Fonseka, Cumar Peiris, and Sunil Perera. The CD is released on the Torana Music Label. The title song Mala was re-arranged to suit today's music scene. The song was originally sung by Christi de Mel and written by the late Karunaratne Abeysekera, while Pem Thrikonne was written by Milroy Dharmaratne and Sunil Perera was responsible for Lathaweemata Mulaya. Sunil Malawana's music career started off with Clarence Wijewardena's first band Moonstones, when he was quite young. His powerful voice and punchy guitar playing saw his stay with the Super Golden Chimes too until he decided to move out of the regular music scene. Now fully involved in the shipping and aviation business world, Sunil Malawana is looking at music as a hobby and that is why he decided to make a comeback with the release of his new CD Mala. Golden Chimes on new tracks To celebrate thirty five successful years in their career the Golden Chimes launched their latest CD Mage Pelpathe Volume 2 which was released on 'the day of their show on Saturday December 10 at the BMICH.
The CD is a refreshing and ideal companion to music lovers who enjoy the vocal stylings of the band and who wish to take a trip down nostalgia lane. Because, the songs contained are the hits associated with the Golden Chimes, and as well as new ones and includes Rukshan Perera, the highly talented vocalist and guitarist who was the music co-ordinator for the album. The other members of the group are Chanaka Perera the vocalist leader on bass, Lankika - vocals, Jagath Peiris - lead guitar and vocals along with Rukshan Perera, Pimal Fernando - keyboards and vocals, Ajith Wijemanne - drums with Dane Asmone - vocals. The selections includes Mage Pelpathe, Guwan Yanaya, Muhudu Rella, Bethlehem Pure and more. Also included on the CD is the Acapella version of the hits of the Golden Chimes which was performed at the concert and was a highlight that evening. The arrangement of this number was by Rukshan Perera whose musical creativity is now an acknowledged factor. The CD is on the Torana label with special thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Wickramasooriya and Dimantha Seneviratne and specially released in remembrance of Clarence Wijewardena. (M.P.) Instrumentals laced with sophistication Three years ago the leading instrumentalist in Sri Lanka, and a wizard in Computer Music Technology Dilup Gabadamudalige released two successful CDs Evolution and In the Mood. In this new year 2006 he has spread his wings further and will be launching his new CD titled Warriors of Light by the end of this week. The tracks prove Diliup's extensive and intricate knowledge of his craft, thus putting his music on a higher plane and creating a much needed Sri Lankan identity in the music scene. There was a time in showbiz when instrumentals were highly popular and often hit the pop music charts. But with the advent of Motown, rhythm and blues, soul and now hip-hop, instrumentals are few and far between. So that Diliup's Warriors of Light gives you the opportunity to enjoy tunes which reach out to your colourful imagination. The CD contains twelve interesting tracks. A Walk in the Forest portrays a young damsel who leaves her home at the break of dawn to collect water. The stream is on the other side of the forest and she has to walk through it. Her feelings are emotionally caught in the composition. The track Give Me a Reason to Love You is woven round a lovers' quarrel where both parties ask the same question and get similar answers. You are made to decide what happens in the end. Rain Part 2 relates to a weary farmer in the midst of a long drought, he keeps looking at the sky in the hope that his prayers are answered.. and then a drizzle starts. Rain Part I composed by Diliup won him the Observer Golden Clef Award for Instrumentals, in 1992. Meditation is all about trying to meditate and not being able to as the mind keeps jumping between different thoughts. The Waiting is Over is a fusion composition which reveals the inimitable creativity of the composer. The title track Warriors of Light according to is about how the warriors will come one day and dispel the darkness, so watch the sky... Apart from the sensitive creativity of the compositions the CD is a musical education, colourfully compiled by Diliup Gabadamudalige and is away from the norm. M.P. Cricket songs CD released Two cricket songs - 'Spin Kings and Cricket Thou Eternal Flame which have been just released are bound to attract lovers of the sport. The songs are the result of the teaming up of 'Sunday Observer' sports journalists Srian Obeysekere and Ranjan Anandappa and popular vocalist Priya Peiris from Moratuwa.
'Cricket Thou Eternal Flame' sung by Priya Peiris, explores the game from the good old days of the English to Bradman and Sobers and contemporary cricket of which the one-day art which was redefined by Arjuna Ranatunga's world cup winning team. Strikingly, both songs chorus essentially on the very core of cricket with Spin Kings played on the pun bowled, bowled, bowled... and Cricket Thou Eternal Flame on 'scored, scored, scored...' with the music set by popular director Jagath Wickramasinghe, and Eranjan Perera respectively which cricket lovers cannot miss out. |
