One dead as tribesmen, troops clash in southwest Pakistan

SIBI, Pakistan, Dec 31 (AFP) - Troops fired on armed tribesman who attacked a checkpost in volatile southwestern Pakistan on Friday, killing one person and injuring seven others, a local official said.

The clash happened in Dera Bugti, a remote town in Baluchistan province, where fiercely independent clans this week went on strike to demand more political rights, jobs and royalties from natural resources.

The violence came nine months after around 60 people died during a firefight in the same town between Pakistani forces and clansmen loyal to white-bearded tribal leader Nawab Akbar Bugti.

"In Dera Bugti some tribesmen attacked a post of Frontier Corps troops on Friday," the town's district coordination officer Abdussamad Lasi said.

"An exchange of firing between the law breakers and security forces continued for one hour, as a result of which one person died and another seven were injured."

Tribesmen also attacked an army post in Dolli near the town of Sui where a rocket attack on a gas plant killed eight people in January but there were no casualties, he added.

However Agha Shahid Bugti, the secretary general of the tribal leader's Jamhoori Watan Party, said 16 people were injured after security forces fired on local people and tribesmen. He said Pakistani forces also fired rockets which fell in the town's sports stadium and near the home of tribal leader Nawab Bugti.
