Asian Junior
and Asian Games - two major events in rowing calendar
by Leslie Fernando Sri Lanka will be involved in five major rowing championships for the year 2006, two foreign regattas in Singapore and Doha, Qatar and three championships here. Deva Henry, the President of the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) said that in addition to the five major international championship meets Sri Lanka will also concentrate on domestic events. The championships at which our rowers will participate are Asian Junior Rowing Championships in Singapore in June, the prestigious Colombo - Madras Regatta in Colombo in July South Asian Games in Colombo, August Amateur Rowing Association of East Regatta in Colombo date not (finalised) and Asian games in Doha, Qatar in December. The ARASL under the leadership of Deva Henry has made steady progress last year with all annual fixtures carried out successfully. The Amateur Rowing Association of East Regatta was not held in Chennai in December as it was flooded. Two of our rowers R.D.S.Fonseka and V.G.N.Santha of Sri Lanka Navy fared well at the Asian Rowing Championships held in Hyderabad, being placed 5th and 6th in the Single Sculls and Double Sculls amongst 53 oarsmen that participated. Henry who is also a senior vice-president of National Olympic Committee added that the national training pool comprising of 32 rowers will begin training on the Beira waters from end of this month in preparation for the South Asian Games to be held in Colombo in August. The rowers will train under Lakmal Wickremage, National coach and Saliya Wijesekera assistant coach. The ARASL will meet on January 11 at the Colombo Rowing Club pavilion to discuss further plans on rowing promotion and also with regard to the imports of new boats for the use of the rowers. Prior to south Asian Games. The opening regatta for the year will take place on February 18 on Beira Waters, Colombo Rowing Club. The events to be worked off are pairs for Vanlangenburg Trophy, sculls for Golden Armstrong Trophy, fours for HMS Enterprise Trophy, Ladies pairs for novices and junior. |
