Call to
vacate Jaffna
'In order to ensure our safety and to redeem our homeland we passionately request all of you to shift and settle in safe Tamil areas' urges a statement issued by the Tamil National Awareness Society in Jaffna. The statement says: Dear Tamil youths, Sinhala chauvinism has once again taken a resolute vow to annihilate the Tamil race. Our enemy, while on the other hand reiterating 'peace' is being anxious to destroy and loot the Tamil homeland. (Thinakural (TK) - 09/01) Naval forces in Trincomalee have forcibly taken people living in the coastal areas out of their residences and demanded them to hoist white flags to condole the death of sailors killed in the Saturday's Dvora explosion. On refusing to do so, public have been intimidated that their houses would be smashed if they failed to obey the order. (TK - 09/01) Cordon and search operations have been intensified in the upcountry over the last few days. Over 100 Tamil youths have been detained and interrogated by the police. Fear prevails amongst the upcountry people. (Virakesari (VK) - 09/01) As political violence is on increase in the North and East of Sri Lanka the British government has appealed to its people not to visit such areas unless need arises. (TK - 11/01) 'It is the humanitarian obligation of the international community to help us obtain a just solution. If the international community fails to do so, we will, without fear, safeguard our existence, life and land in the war waged by people's forces' says the 'declaration to expose the Thamileelam struggle to the international world, delivered at the Tamil National Renaissance Convention held at the Muthur East seashore. (SudarOli (SOI) - 11/01) It is said that the Tamil National Alliance has made a resolution to request a debate in the Parliament over the killing of five innocent Tamil students in Trincomalee. TNA parliamentarian and leader of the parliamentary group R.Sambanthan told 'SudarOli' that a special meeting would be held in Colombo next Monday to arrive at a final conclusion in this regard. (SOI - 12/01) Media personnel are to hold a demonstration in Colombo today in protest of intimidations against Tamil Media personnel. The protest, which will be held opposite fort railway station, is jointly organised by Tamil Media Alliance, Muslim Media Forum, Sri Lanka Working Journalists' Association and several other organisations. (SOI - 12/01) Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauf Hakeem has expressed dissatisfaction over not being invited to the party leaders' meeting summoned by President Rajapakse to discuss peace process. (VK - 12/01) It has been pointed out that General Hospital of Maskeliya is unable to provide proper medical services to the public due to lack of human resources although the hospital is well-equipped and has many buildings. Maskeliya hospital receives the most number of patients in the Nuwara-eliya district. Only 3 physicians are in service whereas the hospital requires 6 doctors.
