UNP condemns
LTTE attacks
by Ananda Kannangara While condemning the spate of attacks recently launched by the LTTE on security and police personnel, the UNP yesterday urged the two main Government allies, the JVP and the JHU to assist President Mahinda Rajapakse to take immediate steps to commence peace talks with the LTTE in order to stop such occurrence further. It is said that nearly 75 personnel in the three Armed Forces and Police lost their lives during the past few weeks due to the LTTE attacks. In an interview with the Sunday Observer UNP Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka said that the JVP was playing a dual role by deceiving the masses while making unnecessary remarks against the UNP for signing the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) with the LTTE. "The JVP is saying that such killings are currently taking place due to the CFA and therefore asks the UNP to take responsibility for these killings," he said.He said the JVP must thank the UNP for signing such an agreement while the international community too highly recommends the CFA which immensely helped to stop killings, opening of the A-9 road to enable people to travel between North and South, traders to develop their day-to-day activities and also the Government to generate development projects. Attanayaka also recalled how the JVP deceived the masses during the election period by saying that they would tear off the CFA and also stop contacts with the Norwegian facilitators, which they did not do after the election. "Therefore I strongly ask the JVP and the JHU to stop putting needless blame on the UNP at this crucial moment and help the Government in its endeavour of commencing peace talks with the LTTE. |
