CID probes
attack on SLMM
by Ranga Jayasuriya The CID was yesterday investigating the explosion at the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission office in Batticaloa as police beefed up security of the ceasefire monitors who had requested additional security. Inspector General Chandra Fernando told the Sunday Observer that a special CID team had been dispatched to Batticaloa to investigate the explosion which took place at around 11.30 on Friday night at the SLMM office in Lake Road, Batticaloa. A report from the Government analyst is awaited to determine the nature of the explosion. Three vehicles parked in the premises were damaged in the blast, which was initially suspected to be a grenade attack. However the nature of the explosion was later disputed with certain reports that a bomb could have been planted in one of the vehicles. SLMM Chief Hagrup Haukland said the explosion was worrisome, but added that the truce monitors continued with their duty. Meanwhile, two sailors were killed and one injured when a Navy road patrol was hit by a clay-more mine explosion in Kayts at around 12.30 p.m. yesterday. The injured sailor is treated at the Palali Military Hospital. In another road patrol, Army recovered one grenade and one anti- personnel mine in Nallur, Jaffna yesterday morning. Meanwhile, in Batticaloa, an LTTE pistol man killed a Tamil youth returning home from Thai Pongal cerebrations at a local Kovil yesterday afternoon. Police said the deceased youth Navam Rajah (29) a resident of Ariyampathy could have been killed by the LTTE who suspected that the youth was collaborating with the Karuna faction. |
