LTTE's air
power boast
LTTE Eastern Leader Bhanu addressing the Tamil Resurgence Convention held in Muttur last week claimed that the LTTE Air Wing was ready for operations. This comes in the wake of reports that the LTTE has developed a new airstrip in the Vanni supplementing its earlier airstrip at Iranamadu. Military intelligence sources had earlier hinted at the possibility of the LTTE having one or two light aircraft. Last year it was also able to ground a Sri Lankan Air Force UAV while it was on a mission in the North. An Air Force spokesman, however, said that the Tiger air power does not pose any serious security threat and its capabilities are limited. Bhanu'sspeech at the Muttur convention was a ploy to lift the sagging morale of the LTTE sympathisers and not a reflection of their capabilities, he added. (JK) |
