Wijeyesinghe Operational Competitions Manager at Asian Games
by Lal Gunasekera Sri Lanka's Ajith Wijeyesinghe, who is an accredited Referee of the International Badminton Federation (IBF) since 2002, has been honoured of being made the Operational Competitions Manager for Badminton for the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar to be staged from December 2 to 16. Wijeyesinghe told the Sunday Observer that his duties include the technical inputs for the infrastructure facilities, training of staff (including 150 volunteers) and also looking into the new developments to be implemented at the Asian Games. At the end of the whole exercise, Wijeyesinghe, will hand it over to the Chief Referee to be appointed by the IBF to run the Asian Games. He further said that 39 disciplines are to be worked off in Doha with 45 countries been represented by 15,000 competitors. There will also be 10,000 technical officers at the Games and that Doha is expecting an influx of nearly 400,000 people and that the city of Doha is being transformed into a new city. Wijeyesinghe, is also the first Asian to be appointed by the IBF to be the Chief Referee for Badminton at the commonwealth games to be staged in Melbourne, Australia in March. Meanwhile, a former President of the Sri Lanka Badminton Association (SLBA), Eraj Wijesinghe, who is the Chairman of the IBF's Administrative Committee, has been nominated as the Technical Delegate for the Commonwealth Games. |
