National Jamboree - SAF Friendship Camp : Scouts prepare for the big event Performing exhibitions, backwoods cooking, night hiking, water sports, open air displays, camp-fires and 'skill-or-rama' are just a few of the exciting activities that scouts from Sri Lanka and abroad will be taking part in, at the seventh National Scout Jamboree, and the fourth South Asian Federation (SAF) Friendship Camp 2006, to be held in Nuwara Eliya.
The jamboree and friendship camp will be held at the Race Course, Nuwara Eliya, from February 21 to 26. The jamboree site is the 'Garden City' in the hills, and is situated 6,000 feet above sea level, and 2,000 km away from the Colombo City. The camp, under the theme 'Forward with Effort and Unity', is organised by the Sri Lanka Scouts Association. The different events lined up for the programme are BP's Day and Former Scouts Day (February 22), Gilwelians Day (23), Differently Abled Scouts Day (24) and Cub Scouts and Girl Guides Day (25). Activities like camp-fires and backwoods cooking promote the concept of 'Learning by doing' as Scouts get to learn these activities by actually taking part in them. The Speaker of Parliament, W. J. M. Lokubandara and Minister of Education, Susil Premajayantha, will be the chief guests for the opening ceremony, on the 22nd, and closing ceremony on the 25th respectively.
Over 10,000 Scouts from 33 Scout Districts have already registered to
take part in the jamboree. Over 100 differently abled Scouts from schools
in Wattala, Ratmalana and Galle have also registered for the events, while
over 250 Scouts from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, China and Bhutan
in the Asia Pacific Region, and Norway will be taking part. Only Scouts
above the age of 12 can take part in the camp. |
