Balancing act by Rikaza Hassan
The reputation of the Chinese woman has always been one of meekness and repression. She has been treated as though a weak creature, relegated to her duties in the home. The China Woman Acrobatics Troupe, comprising Chinese women from all parts of the country dispel the old myths with their incredible deeds.
Showing in Sugathadasa stadium until the 22nd of February, these women perform feats of daring with the elegance of a woman. Be entertained by acrobatics on dangling ropes, the 'Dancing Meteor' and a wonderful act involving a 'bottomless bucket'. Be amazed as plates are spun by the girls in various formations; as acrobats cycle in pyramidal formations; and as contortionists twist with glass goblets.
Soothe your soul with the melodic musical notes of the Diabolo (a hollow carved bamboo where strings are drawn by hands). Inflame your passions with the 'Melody of Silk Ribbons', as lovers dance under a Chinese love knot, through a myriad of colours depicting their emotions. The China Woman Acrobatics Troupe was founded in 1980. It's powerful line-up, superior feats and exceptional style has won it worldwide acclaim. They perform not only traditional Chinese acrobatics, but through their journeys have incorporated dozens of other types of performing arts, combining them with their unique techniques.
Their performance in Colombo is in aid of 'Home for Street Children' and was organised by Graetian Gunawardhana, Governor, Lions Club 306, Colombo. |
