Sri Lankan junior rowers at Asian Championships by Leslie Fernando For the first time, the junior rowers from Sri Lanka will participate at the Asian Junior Rowing Championships to be held in July in Singapore. Deva Henry, President, Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) said that Asian Rowing Federation is keen that Sri Lanka compete at this championships. The ARASL accepted the invitation and confirmed participation. Henry said that ARASL will meet on February 22 to finalise all plans and preparations for this event. According to Asian Rowing Federation, rowers from 18 countries are expected to row. The events to be worked off are single sculls, double sculls, pairs and fours. The ARASL will also appoint a coach to handle the junior rowers as National coach Lakmal Wickremage and his assistant Saliya Weerasekera are involved with the national training squad in preparation for the South Asian Games to be held in Colombo in August. The junior rowers will train on the Beira Waters in the evenings daily and on Saturdays in the morning too. Opening Regatta The first rowing event for the year 2006. Opening Regatta conducted by the Colombo Rowing Club will be held on Saturday, February 25 on the Beira Waters commencing from 2 p.m. The events to be held are pairs for Vanlangenberg Trophy, sculls for Gordon Armstrong Trophy, Ladies Junior Pairs, Ladies Novices Pairs, Masters Fours and Senior Fours. The events will be open to Colombo Rowing Club members, CRC/ARASL and Institutional members. According to an official of CRC, oarsmen and oarswomen from S. Thomas', Royal, Ananda, St. Joseph's, Old Joes SC, Sri Lanka Navy, University of Colombo, University of Moratuwa, Musaeus College, Ladies College and CRC will participate at the Inaugural Regatta. |
