SSC by an innings on third day by Ranjan Anandappa SSC clinched the Premier League Championship when they defeated Chilaw Marians by an innings and 17 runs in a lop sided contest in the final played at the Colts Cricket Club grounds at Havelock Park yesterday. The Chilaw Marians were dismissed for 172 in their first innings fared no better when they were all out for 253 in their second innings as the four day competition to ascertain the best cricket playing club in the island ended on the third day with 25 overs remaining. SSC who were 426 for 9 overnight with a century by skipper Avishka Gunawardena, and notable contributions coming from the bats of Kaushal Silva (53), Thilan Samaraweera 62, Jeevan Mendis (63) and Dammith Indika (59) reached 442. The Chilaw team going in for the second time with a deficit of 270 runs to make their opponents' bat once again flopped and lost wickets at regular intervals. They were 121 for 8 at one stage and a huge innings defeat staring at them. But a fighting 98 run ninth wicket stand between Chinthaka Perera (57) and Praneeth Jayasundera (90) delayed the SSC win. Perera and Jayasundera made the winners to fight hard by utilising only 79 balls to produce their fighting ninth wicket stand. Perera's 57 included seven sixes and two boundaries while Jayasundera who ran out of partners and threw in the towel, struck six fours and four sixes facing 93 bowls in his face saving innings. Off spinner Suraj Mohammed who did the early damage by taking a couple of wickets ended with impressive figures of 5 for 78, Nuwan Zoysa and Dilhara Fernando took two wickets apiece. Chilaw Marians 172 and 253 in 58.2 overs.
