Protest campaign in UK

A huge demonstration will be staged in UK today protesting the country's attempts to expel the Sri Lankan Tamils who have sought political asylum there. Executive Committee of Tamil Asylum Seekers has organised the protest. (Thinakural (TK) - 19/03)

It is learnt that there will be changes in the cabinet after the local government polls and representatives of minor parties will be absorbed into it. It is also learnt President's sibling Chamal Rajapakse is engaged in talks in a bid to get the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress join the government. (TK - 19/03)

The meeting between the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians and LTTE political wing leader S. P. Thamilchelvam will take place toady at the LTTE's peace secretariat in Kilinochchi at 11 a.m. Upcoming local polls, matters related to the Geneva talks and issues concerning the current political scenario will be discussed in the meeting. Complete hartal was observed in Kathankudi yesterday. All activities came to a standstill. Buses travelling in the area were stoned and several commuters got injured. Motor-bikes belonging to traders of the area have been seized by unidentified persons in the last two months. The hartal was observed in protest of the kidnap of the vehicles. (TK - 19/03)

In the event of local polls not being put off, the TNA will contest the election and endeavour to win all the regional councils. The resolute decision was taken following the discussion between the LTTE political wing leader and the alliance MPs. (TK - 20/03)

Norway's International Development Minister Erik Solheim conveyed to the Sri Lankan government the dissatisfaction of the LTTE over the attacks on its cadres after the Geneva talks. Solheim contacted Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, head of the government delegation for the Geneva talks and told him about this over the phone. (TK - 20/03)

Yesterday, Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake postponed the local government polls in North-East excluding Trincomalee and Ampara by 6 months. (TK - 21/03)

'The government should launch an unbiased investigation regarding the remarks made by Kingsley Rodrigo, the Head of PAFFREL that said Muslim armed groups by the name of 'Jihath' and 'Jama Athe Islami' were functioning in the east' said Deputy Minister Hussain Baila speaking at the debate on extending Emergency law in Parliament yesterday. High level sources of the government said yesterday that millions of rupees had been given to Up-country labour union leaders to keep mum on the Upper Kotmale project issue and to contest the local polls in alliance with the ruling party. (SOI - 22/03)

The TNA has requested the Election Commissioner to postpone the local election in the districts of Trincomalee and Ampara too. (Virakesari (VK) - 23/03)

Complete hartal was observed in Trincomalee yesterday demanding that what was agreed upon in Geneva be upheld and the removal of the ban on sea-fishing and condemning the recent attacks in the area. (VK - 25/03)
