Kesarralal Gunasekera, the Mayoral candidate of the United People's Freedom Alliance for the Dehiwela-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council has a novel slogan. 'You choose the most efficient leader', he says after exhorting the populace to vote for a UPFA administration.

As the present Leader of the Opposition of the local authority of this sprawling Colombo suburb Gunasekera is acutely aware not only about his political rivals in the open but also the covert warfare within the ranks of the same party for the 'manape'.

A chartered accountant by profession Gunasekera has been in politics from 1978. He has been a MMC from 1984 and was a National List MP of the Democratic United National Front in 1994.

He was intimately associated with the politics of the late Lalith Athulathmudali and served as his Co-ordinating Secretary and Managing Director of Ceylon Shipping Lines and Ceylon Port Services while he was Minister of Trade and Shipping.
