Netball Academy - a boon to young players

Thirty-one players received special awards at the inaugural awards presentation of the Academy of Netball, Kotte held at the Sri Jayawardenapura Balika Maha Vidyalaya, Doubiggin Hall, Kotte on March 19.

The Academy of Netball is a dream of the joint effort of two school colleagues Thilaka Jinadasa and Shyama Cooray who visualised to impart their skills and talents in netball to the next generation and as a result the 'Academy of Netball' was born. It has filled the vacuum the players of this country needed and academy of this nature to pursue their special training in the field of netball.

This Academy of Netball founded on 19 March 2005 with 40 players and two coaches has now grown into more than 100 players and two assistant coaches, three apprentice coaches and today it has become the pioneer Netball Academy in Sri Lanka.

The Academy also conducted training and workshops programmes for schools and hotel teams on regular basis and extended the programmes for overseas training at the early stages for netball coaches from the Maldives.

Thilaka Jinadasa, Director Coaching and Technical and Shyama Cooray, Director Administration and Finance of the Academy of Netball said that during this year while discharging training programmes in the tsunami-affected southern area, 15 schools were associated in training and also donated netball equipment, T-shirts, skirts, warm up jerseys and built the netball courts for their training.

These programmes have been mainly sponsored by Deshamannya Dr. Lalith Kotelawala, Chairman, Ceylinco Consolidates and Jerald Fernando, Managing Director, International Building Systems (Pvt) Ltd.

Sathyajith Wijayapura, Director, Ceylinco Group was the chief guest while Ms. Sriyani Ranaweera, Vice-Principal, Sri Jayawardenapura BMV, Dr. Asanga Wijerathne, Director Physical Education, British School Colombo, Nalaka Hewamadduma, Sports Psychology and Motivation also graced at the awards ceremony.
