Lanka's 4x400 quartet finishes last Sampath Bandara reporting from Australia Sri Lanka who entered the final of the Men's 4 x 400 metres Relay at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia yesterday failed to make an impression when they finished last with a time of 3 minutes 06.42 seconds. Sri Lanka were represented by Rohan Pradeep Kumara, Rohitha Pushpakumara, Shiwantha Weerasuriya and Prasanna Amarasekera. Australia won the gold medal with a time of 3 minutes 00.93 seconds, while South Africa (3 minutes 01.84 seconds) and Jamaica (3 minutes 01.94 seconds) won the silver and bronze medals respectively. England were in fourth place with 3 minute 02.01 seconds, while Nigeria finished fifth in 3 minutes 02.16 seconds. Bahamas quartet did not face the starter, while Trinidad and Tobago were disqualified. Sri Lanka's star shuttler Niluka Karunaratne did well to reach the quarter-finals of the Men's Singles event, but lost to England's Aamir Ghaffar 16-21, 21-13, 11-21. The only success for Sri Lanka came from weight lifter Chinthana Vidanage in the 62 kg category when he won the gold medal with a total of 271 kg. The 26-year-old Lankan from Polonnaruwa finished with the same total with India's Arun Murugesan, but was adjudged the winner by virtue of lighter body weight.
