Trinity and Mahamaya swimmers expected to excel by Leslie Fernando Swimmers from Kandy-Trinity College and Mahamaya College, the undisputed boys and girls champions will go out firm favourites top honours at the three day National Pentathlon Swimming Championships conducted by the Interim Committee of the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union to be held on March 31, April 1 and 2 at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool. This meet will be the first trial to pick swimmers for the annual Asian Age Group Swimming Championships to be held in July in Singapore. The best in both boys and girls under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16, under-19 as well as open will be selected and they will be awarded special trophies. Their performances will be on points in the freestyle, butterfly stroke, breast stroke, back stroke and the individual medley. The main focus will be on the swimmers Conrad Francis of Aquatic Academy of Sri Lanka, Andrew Abeysinghe of Rainbow AC, Nilmin Arseculeratne, Milinda Wickremasinghe both of St.Joseph's College, Naveen Karunaratne of RAC, Prabha Madhavi Dharmadasa of Asian International School, Chathuri Abeykoon of Ladies College and Mayumi Raheem of Otter Aqatic Club who swam at the Commonwealth Games, in Melbourne, Australia. All these swimmers are expected to perform well at the championships and go on to establish records in the different strokes. Trinity College and Mahamaya College who excelled at the Kandy District Swimming Association championships held two weeks ago together with their performances at the Age Group Relay Carnival and the Dialog GSM Age Group Swimming Championships are fancied to retain the boys and girls overall championship titles. The swimmers from Ananda, St.Joseph's College, Royal, Asian International School, S.Thomas' College in the boys and Hillwood College, Kandy, Ladies College, Musaeus College, AIS, Gateway International School,Kandy among the girls are bound to offer stiff opposition to Trinity and Mahamaya swimmers. |
