Rudra, Godfather of Police Rugby is no more

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Rudra Rajasingham, died after a brief illness on Friday at the Police Hospital and his cremation takes place at the General Cemetery, Kanatte tomorrow (Monday) at 5 p.m. with full police honours.

Rudy, as he was affectionately known, was the Godfather of police rugby. A friendly character, the late Rajasingham, knew every police ruggerite by name and helped every player. He headed the Police Sports Club and its rugby section too.

The late Rajasingham was an old boy of Trinity College, Kandy where he was awarded colours in both cricket and rugby in 1943.

He later turned out for the CR & FC at rugby with distinction and was its President in 1971 and was later (1974) made a life member. He was also the President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) in 1993-94. (L.G.)
