Shoot, and save wild life by Ranga Chandrarathne
This is a much awaited annual event which not only promote wildlife photography, but a special area in the art of capturing finer moments through the lenses to create awareness, specially among youth on the importance of protecting wildlife in Sri Lanka. Yala Village, a resort hotel under John Keells Holdings, American Express Card issued by Nations Trust Bank and Fuji Film are the principal sponsors of the Wildlife Photographer 2006. The contest will provide an opportunity for talented photographers to showcase their talents at the highest-level, while enhancing their skills in nature photography. The Top prize will go to the Title Holder of Rs. 100,000 and the Junior Title Holder will also get Rs. 25,000 as a reward. This contest will help to focus attention on the perils of the Sri Lankan wildlife and habitat and inspire the younger generation to foster and protect wild life. The wildlife contest is open to all photographers both locally and internationally, for images made of Sri Lankan wildlife and locations that depict the wild and places of natural beauty in the island.
The wildlife and nature protection society of Sri Lanka was established one hundred years ago, in 1894. It is one of the oldest conservation societies in the world, and probably the oldest in South and South East Asia, with the exception of the Bombay Natural History Society.
The office-bearers are all volunteers who give their time, energy and expertise to support and uphold the objectives of the society. Some of the prominent past Presidents include Major W. W. A. Philips, Dr. R. L. Spittle and Lanka Ratna Thilo Hoffman. The Sri Lanka Wildlife Society is the principal organiser of the competition. |

The Wildlife Photographer 2006 under the theme of "Shoot to save the
wildlife of Sri Lanka" was launched on March 27, 2006, at the Hotel Trans
Asia. 
Sri Lankan competitors should enclose cheques for Rs. 200 as the entrance
fee, while overseas photographers should enclose cheques for US$ 20 and
payments drawn in favour of "Wildlife Photographer". All entries should be
sent before December 30, 2006. Details of rules and regulations is available
at www.wildlifephotographer.lk. 
The Society was the first NGO in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) to be
incorporated by an Act of Parliament. It is also the first such NGO in the
country to be a full member of IUCN (The International Union for the
Conservation of Nature).
