An able guide to the English learner A short cut to English through Sinhala is an able guide to Sinhala students who are learning English as a Second Language. The book is written by W. A. Henry (BA). He was formerly an English teacher at Ananda College, Colombo.
The book is an able guide to G.C.E. Ordinary Level students and Advanced Level students. It is also an able guide to Untrained English Assistant teachers. It gives detailed descriptions of nouns, verbs conjunctions , the use of capital letters - which is a difficulty among learners of English. More complex issues of the subject and predicate are very clearly described making it easy for the learner to pick up. Exercises are given at the end of every lesson to enable the person to put into practise what he or she has learnt. The book comprises 16 lessons and goes into simple detail in every lesson, enabling the student to easily comprehend the subject. Model Test papers are also available in the book. Sinhala slang and English equivalents are aptly described, giving the learner a deeper insight into the complexities of the Language. Many short cuts have been taken in the book, to make it easier for the student. The explanatory notes will help the Sinhala student to understand the various nuances that have been used and overcome any difficulty that he or she might encounter. The book has dealt comprehensively with both languages keeping the learner in mind. The book is well-planned and is very thorough and would help any student wanting to learn the English language.
