Lankans thrashed again by Australia, South Korea Vernon Gunasekera reporting from Hongkong HONG KONG, Saturday, Sri Lanka lost to Australia and Korea yesterday in their two games at the Hong Kong Sevens 2006 International Rugby Tournament. Australia beat Sri Lanka by 50-0 while the Koreans beat Sri Lanka by 45-5. However, Sri Lanka played better rugby in their game with Australia than their previous day's match against France. Australia's points came from 5 goals and 3 tries. At half-time they were leading by 31-0. Sri Lanka's tackling was good compared to the game with France. They even had two chances of scoring, but failed. Shareef Salahudeen knocked down the ball five metres from the goal line and Anuradha Dharmathilake missed a line out ball from the same distance. Amjad Buksh played well in this game. Once, before being tackled he ran alone with the ball with side steps for 50-metres. There was no support. Contrast to this game, Sri Lanka team's tackling was very poor against Korea. At one time, Korea's Chae Jae-Young ran 50-metres through the opposition without being challenged. Sri Lanka's only try in this game came from Sajith Mallikarachchi. Fazil Marijah ran 30 metres and passed the ball to Sanjeewa Jayasinghe and he passed it to Sajith to put the finishing touches. Korea's 45 points came from 5 goals and 2 tries. Hong Kong Sevens women's final was won by New Zealand beating Australia by 19-12.
